Crosscut Ideas Festival: Deepak Chopra talks holistic health at 76

This is the message that he brought to the Crosscut Ideas Festival during a virtual appearance with PBS NewsHour co-host Amna Nawas, recorded April 19, 2023.

Nawaz opens with a question about the increasing stress levels of American life during and since the pandemic, inspiring Chopra to circle back to his own experience with yoga study. Much yoga literature, he says, has not focused broadly enough on the totality of yoga practices and philosophy that incorporate all eight limbs, and in his book he wanted to correct that.

Listen to a podcast version of this conversation on the Crosscut Talks podcast.

Why? Because “I don’t think it’s fair to separate mental health from physical health,” he says, leading into a discussion of his recent research into the parasympathetic nervous system, which governs the body’s activities at rest (from heart rate to tone of voice) and his use of technology in stress-related therapy.

In a conversation that expanded well beyond this, his 93rd book, Chopra offered his ideas (and Plato’s) about world leaders and even names a specific person he would love to see run for U.S. president. He also discusses his own personal strategy for relieving stress (hint: avoid it), outlines how his career and business responsibilities and ambitions have been changing as he ages, and reveals the four questions we should all ask ourselves each day to nurture hope in the face of what seems like a constant deluge of bad news.

Rob Campbell outlines the problems with the health system and what needs to change

Empower separate emergency executive leaderships for hospitals, says Rob Campbell. Photo / Getty Images

Former Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) chair Rob Campbell addressed a New Zealand Women in Health gathering on Friday night where 90 clinical health professionals from around Aotearoa heard him speak.

Opinion:

My topic tonight is “The Health Services Emergency”

Thank you for the opportunity to be with you this evening. Given that over 80 per cent of the quarter million or so people working in the healthcare sector are women I am taking the liberty of speaking to you as representing the whole workforce. I am not sure that has always been the case in policy or practice but let’s start a new tradition.

It is opportune to be talking about the immediate future of the healthcare sector and the emergency it faces. I deliberately move on to the description “emergency” because the term “crisis” has become so worn in political discussion. It has come, perhaps lead by the “climate crisis”, to carry with it a connotation of longevity, helplessness and inaction.

Emergency seems to carry with it a higher call to action. That is what health services need now.

I had an email today from the Minister of Health Ayesha Verrall which I will read to you:

“Dear Rob, I hope that you are willing to put our little misunderstanding behind us. Things in the sector are very bad. I think it may even be an emergency though the Ministry continues to insist that everything is fine. Would you be willing to come back as my “independent health emergency advisor”? Not much point in rejoining the board which has little influence and Peter Hughes will not let you back into the public

I’m a GP – here’s when your excess body fat is REALLY dangerous and 2 ways to eliminate it

WHEN it comes to our health, excess fat rarely has a positive impact.

But while all unwanted body fat has a bad reputation, there is one place on the body that is particularly dangerous for us to store those extra pounds.

Visceral fat can lead to all sorts of health complications

Excess belly fat, also known as visceral fat or the “spare tyre”, is what doctors refer to as “deadly weight”, and it gets this dark nickname for a very good reason – belly fat can seriously impact your life expectancy.

In a major study from the Journal of the American Heart Association, UK residents aged 40 to 69 were assessed and researchers found that women who carried more weight around their middles had a 10-20 per cent greater risk of heart attack than those who carried the same amount of extra weight over all.

Another key piece of research from the Annals of Internal Medicine, discovered that people who had an average weight, but carried excess fat in a “spare tyre” around their belly, not only had a much higher risk of dying of heart disease, but also a higher risk of dying from any other health related cause compared with those who didn’t carry fat around their belly.

No matter if you are a “healthy” weight, overweight, or obese, if you carry excess fat around your belly, you are at a much higher risk of health problems and premature death.

VISCERAL FAT RISKS

GP Dr Sarah Garsed says: “Patients know that being overweight or obese isn’t healthy, but they are often shocked to learn they can be a ‘healthy’ weight but still be at risk from disease if they carry excess fat around their middle.

“Weight gain around the central area of

They’re young, they look healthy, but they need a seat on the train. This is why

He would like to have children after marriage, but first, he must find “a partner who’s very understanding”, he said.

“One of my criteria before I get into relationships is that (potential partners) need to know my illness. They need to know that I’m not always 100 per cent (well).”

His ex knew about his condition. There were times when she would physically support him as he walked around in pain. At other times when he experienced a flare-up, he would grin and bear it on a special night out.

But the relationship did not pan out, though not because of his condition, according to Pang.

As for Nicole Lim, finding a special someone was the furthest thing on her mind when she was a teenager battling three autoimmune diseases and a failing liver.

But after her liver transplant gave her a new lease of life, she started caring about her appearance. She bought dresses and make-up in her early 20s.

She went out on a date after including some details of her illness on her dating app profile. Her date knew of her condition, but they did not “click”, she said.

“I’m a bit body-conscious as well, because I have scarring from the transplant. And I’ve got stretch marks from the sudden weight gain from the steroids (to suppress her immune system).”

Like Pang, she said she must find someone who is “super understanding”.

While she was previously jealous of her peers, she has since come to terms with her diseases, which she now keeps under control with more than 10 types of medication. In fact, she has published a book about her experiences.

In sharing her story, she seeks what others with autoimmune diseases perhaps also want from society. “Don’t look at what I can’t do,” she

“In high school, it’s hard. You struggle with a lot of things. You’re trying to figure out your life, and is just really hard mentally on you,” stated Emma Core, a student at Spencerville High School.

Spencerville High School is bringing awareness to the mental health challenges any high schooler can face with a mental health activity day. Students had a chance to release that stress with fun activities from bounce houses to sidewalk chalk and even boxing. Wrapping up a busy school year, a break from the hustle and bustle is just what the students needed.

“After having our state test, I think we’ve all kind of needed a moment to relax and kick back. Boxing has been really fun. We’ve done some painting, a lot of artwork, which has really helped our mental well-being I think,” explained Henry Lee, a student at Spencerville High School.

Overcomer Boxing Studio opened their doors and taught the students basic boxing combinations. The students had permission to have at it with a punching bag, and they appreciate the chance to release that tension inside.

“It’s exciting to have a class like this that’s usually so, oh, you don’t want to be aggressive, we get a chance to let that aggression out and let our minds be a little bit more free than a school setting,” added Lee.

“I feel like they come in, they are kind of wound up. By the time they leave, they are a little bit wound down, they’re a little more stress-free. That’s what I really love to see, that’s kind of why

Brunei health minister advises people to limit strenuous activities amid hot weather conditions in country

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 14 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Ministry of Health (MoH) of Brunei amid heatwaves in the country has advised the public to take precautionary measures, such as postponing or limit strenuous and if unavoidable, wear a hat or use a umbrella to protect themselves.

This is following a press statement issued by the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department on the likelihood of El-Nino occurring that will cause dry and hot weather conditions in the upcoming months in the Sultanate.

According to the ministry, excessive heat can cause a person to frequently sweat, and the lack of fluid in the body could result in exhaustion, dehydration and heat stroke. Children and the elderly are the groups that are the most at risk of experiencing these health problems, the MoH said.

The public is also advised to use sunscreen, stay hydrated, avoid sugary drinks and avoid wearing dark and tight clothing.

“Do activities in a sufficient ventilation area. Do not sit or leave behind anyone or pet in a vehicle without air conditioning,” urged the ministry, adding that the public needs to be aware of early signs of heat stroke and immediately seek medical treatment if these signs are present.

Among the signs of heat stroke include a high body temperature, dizziness, less sweating even in hot weather, reddish skin, dry and hot, weakness or muscle spasm, nausea and vomiting, high heartbeat, rapid breathing, convulsions, unconsciousness and behavioural changes such as confusion, disorientation or shock. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
